"I started out having perfect pitch on several notes, Bflat, C, D, Eflat, E, F G Aflat; keys associated with specific songs. I relied on that recognition and my connection to the clarinet for much of my career. I have shifted my theoretical energies away from recognizing pitches and towards organizing what I hear. In recent years I have been surprised by the presence of pitch memory, rather than being into using it. Theory is just the way you organize what you hear, and perfect pitch has nothing to do with theoretical organisation."
